Gmail for iOS – (iPhone, iPad & iPod Touch)

0

Waiting. Walking. Watching TV. Working out. Winding down. Waking up. We check email pretty much everywhere these days. And when we do, we want easy access to our important messages so we can respond quickly and get back to life — or slinging birds at thieving green pigs.

With that in mind, we’ve created a new Gmail app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. We’ve combined your favorite features from the Gmail mobile web app and iOS into one app so you can be more productive on the go. It’s designed to be fast, efficient and take full advantage of the touchscreen and notification capabilities of your device. And it’s one more reason to switch to Gmail.

Speed

We want to give you the information you need quickly, with minimal effort and distraction. So we’ve included some time-saving features:

  • Get alerted to new messages with push notifications and sounds
  • Find an email in seconds with search across your entire inbox
  • Autocomplete email addresses from your Gmail contacts or select from your device’s address book
  • Upload photos with a click using the new attachment button in compose view
  • On iPad, navigate your inbox and read your mail simultaneously with split view

.

Uplaod Photos

.

Efficiency

Our inboxes overflow with dozens and even hundreds of messages a day—and this can be even more challenging on a smaller screen. The new Gmail app helps organize your mail so you don’t have to go wading through your inbox to find that key message from your boss or loved one:

  • Focus on your important messages first with Priority Inbox
  • Quickly scan countless emails on the same subject with threaded conversations
  • Organize your mail by archiving, labelling, starring, deleting and reporting spam

Threaded conversations on the iPad

.

Touch

We’ve also optimized the interface so you can perform common actions in Gmail with the lightest touch:

  • Pull down your inbox to rapidly refresh if you’re eager for new mail
  • Swipe right to view your labels without ever leaving your inbox
  • Swiftly scroll through dozens of emails just by sliding your finger

.

Swipe right to view labels

..

We hope the Gmail app makes checking email on the go a little easier. It is available in the App Store today and works on all devices running iOS 4+.

iOS 5 features – Everything You Need To Know!

0

iOS 5, Apple’s new mobile operating system, was shown off at WWDC. As expected, the new version includes a brand-new notifications system, and system-wide social integration. Here’s everything you need to know:

iOS 5

Features

Notifications Center: all current iOS users know that the current notifications system was showing its age. Apple has turned that around by building a new system, which unobtrusively displays all notifications at the top of the screen, even during games, and on the Lock Screen. By sliding them down, users will be able to visualize all unread notifications, or dismiss them completely by hitting an “X” button next to them. Very straight-forward. Notification can include missed calls, voice mail messages (which can be played right from the Notifications Center and even notifications from other Apps.

This system is very similar to MobileNotifier, which isn’t surprising, since the company has recently hired its main developer.

Notifications

Reminders: this feature, as the name implies, allows users to set different reminders for different times of the day, and different places. Thanks to the geolocation support present in devices, users can now configure Reminders to pop up a notification at a certain time and at a certain place, and even sync across devices using iCal. It’s really to-do lists on steroids!

Reminders

Enhanced Safari: The iOS browser now looks a lot more like its desktop counterpart, with a few extra features of its own. Tabbed browsing now looks identical to the way it looks on the Windows and Mac versions, with tabs displayed across the top, at least on the iPad. The new Safari also brings the Reader feature, displaying a website’s content in an easy text only view, but unlike what happened before, users are now able to bookmark content onto a “Reading List” for later or send it to friends.

Safari

Twitter Integration: as rumored, the new iOS 5 includes deeper system-wide integration with Twitter. While there’s no support for other social networks, this feature is integrated with many apps, including the Camera App, allowing you to quickly tweet out what you’re working on. You can log into Twitter from System Preferences. It’s a single log in.

Twitter

New Mail client: similarly to what happened in Lion, the iOS mail client is also receiving an upgrade. The App now supports draggable addresses, as well as the ability to flag messages and search them and dictionary lookup, by tapping on a word and selecting “Define”.

iMessage: it’s like iChat for iOS users. It lets you send text messages, photos, videos and even have group conversations, similarly to any other messaging client. This application is also a great new example of how Notifications Center, since this App interacts beautifully with it. With this out the gate, I one is left to wonder what will happen to iChat.

Independence from computers: Previous versions of iOS required users to connect them to a computer in order to set them up, update them or sync them. iOS 5 will put an end to all that, by allowing users to update the device over-the-air. There’s also a new set-up wizard for new devices, allowing them to be configured for the first time without the need for a desktop computer. Can those who hate iTunes finally proclaim victory?

PC Free

Tens of small additions: iOS 5 includes a number of small improvements, such as direct game downloads in the Game Center, a new optional keyboard, enhancements to the Music App on the iPad and an enhanced Camera app.

Availability

If you’re a developer and have an iPhone 4 or 3GS, a 3rd or 4th generation iPod touch or a first or second-gen iPad, you’ll be able to grab iOS 5 from Apple Developer Center today for testing purposes, so you can get your Apps ready for many of the features we’ve talked about, such as Notifications Center.

Regular users would be able to grab the software for free later this fall.

How to create a US Based Apple ID outside the US.

4

There are some awesome free app for iOS which are only available to download in US & you are not a resident of US.. What you will do?

Here is a easy workaround of a problem.. You want to download Google Earth or Adobe Ideas app for your iPhone/iPad and that app is free for download on the iTunes Apps store but with one condition – you need to have a US based Apple ID to install them on to your iPhone or iPad..

THIS IS A PROBLEM!

Soulution: Sign out from your old (The one you are using right now!) app store account & create a new Apple ID and set “none” as the payment method (assuming that you don’t have a U.S. based credit card). You’ll now be able to download US apps with the new Apple ID.

Now There arrives another problem that when you try to make a new Apple app store account you are unable to see “None” Payment Option in your iTunes.

Well, there are two ways to create Apple IDs inside iTunes.

1) You can either go to App Store > Create Account.

2) Simply download an app and iTunes will prompt you to create an Apple ID, The “none” option for payment will only become available if you follow Option 2.

For Option 2 follow these Instructions.

Step1: Launch iTunes > Click on Itunes Store Tab from the left column (As shown in the below image)

Step 2: Scroll down to the end of the page there you will find “Change Country” option. For more Deatils see Image attached.

Step 3: Now select US from the List.

Step 4: Now click on the App Store Tab > & select Great Free Apps from the drop down Menu.

Step 5: Click on any free app a new prompt window will open, from that Window click on “Create New Account” and rest is piece of cake!

Now you are able to see “None” option, Click on it & enjoy Apple ID for iTunes without a Credit Card in US.

Here is a simple Recap to create an Apple ID with a U.S. address but without requiring a credit card:

- Launch iTunes and switch to the iTunes store. Make sure you are not logged in.
- Scroll to the bottom and change your country to United States.
- Next go to App store and download any of the free apps, iTunes will now prompt you to create a new Apple account and this time, you’ll definitely see the “none” option on the Payments screen.

Touchscreens and it’s types: Difference between them and how they works.

Touchscreen eg 4

Touchscreen the omnipresent visual display is said to be the most game changer technology that allows you to operate user interface of any device by just, a single touch either using finger or stylus. Today, touchscreens is used most widely in mobiles, media players, cameras and tablets but, most of us didn’t know exactly about what is capacitive touch, Resistive touch, what’s the real difference between them and other than these, there are few more touchscreen types. Some of you might know the differences between them but, didn’t know how they work! hence this post is for everyone who wants to know everything about touchscreens.

Touchscreen eg 1 200x200
Touchscreen eg 2 200x200
Touchscreen eg 5 200x200

Four kind of touchscreens are widely used among different applicable areas.

  • Resistive – basic touch mobiles, low cost touch devices for eg – Nokia N900, Nokia C6, HTC Tatoo, Samsung Omnia Pro, LG Cookie.
  • Capacitive – Tablets, High-end Smartphones, High-end touch devices  for eg – Apple iPhone, Nokia N8, Motorola Milestone, LG Optimus One, Samsung Wave I & II.
  • Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) – harsh Environment, food Preparation, avionics.
  • Infrared - outdoor applications, ATM & bill pay kiosks, DVD rental kiosks, point of sale.

These technologies differ in the mechanisms they use and their processes for enabling touchscreen technology. For instance, a capacitive touch panel works with an electric field, surface acoustic wave uses ultrasonic waves, infrared uses light beams.

Difference between all of them

Touch Technology Resistive Capacitive SAW Infrared
Durability 3 year 2 Year 5 Year 5 Year
Transparency Bad Ok Good Good
Accepts Touch Anything Conductive Finger/Pen Finger/Pen
Intense light-resistant Good Bad Good Bad
Response time <10ms <15ms 10ms <20ms
Following Speed Good Good Low Good
Waterproof Good Good Ok Ok

Let’s talk briefly about each of them:

What is Resistive Touchscreen and how it works?

Resistive touchscreen

Resistive touchscreen are made up of many layers but, the most crucial are two two flexible layers coated with a resistive material and gap between these layers is separated either by an air gap or microdots. Once we apply a bit pressure to touch the surface of touchscreen, it creates a contact between both of the layers while, the horizontal and vertical lines on both of the layers records the actual location of the precise touch. Resistive touch is a primitive and it was widely used in touch smartphones but, now it’s been replaced by capacitive touch. Well that doesn’t means resistive touch is dead as it’s still used in making low-cost touch mobiles as they are cheap.

Advantages

  • Low-cost, water and dust resistant
  • Touch from any object, either finger, Stylus etc

Disadvantages

  • Can’t determine two-touch made simultaneously ( No multitouch)
  • Allows only 85% of the light let out emitted by the display
  • Easily scratched and couldn’t used with sharp objects.
  • The touch error rate is high

What is capacitive touchscreen and how it works?

capacitive touchscreen

Next is capacitive touchscreen, which are comprises of an insulator such as glass, coated with transparent conductor such as indium tin oxide. When we touch the, surface of the touchscreen it results in a distortion of the screen’s electrostatic field, which is measured as a change in capacitance. The touch location than sent to the controller for processing. Today, capacitive is the most preffered choice amongst device makers and is widely used in devices such as tablets, Smartphones, MP3 players, computer monitors etc.

Advantages

  • Multi-touch capable
  • Better clarity and allows upto 90% transparency.
  • Fast and accurate response in comparable to resistive
  • Long-life around 225 million clicks

Disadvantages

  • Sensitive only to conductive object like finger, no stylus support. However, stylus with conductive material on it’s tip can work
  • Cannot be used in all weather scenarios

What is Surface acoustic Wave Touchscreen and how it works?

SAW surface acoustive wave touchscreen

Surface acoustic Wave (SAW) is a more advanced kind of touchscreen and uses ultrasonic waves that pass over the touch screen panel. When the screen is touched, a portion of the wave is absorbed. This change in the ultrasonic waves registers the position of the touch event and sends this information to the controller for processing. Because the panel is all glass there are no layers that can be worn, giving this technology the highest durability factor and also the highest clarity.

Advantages

  • Being no electric field created, it emits 100% light resultantly quality image received.
  • Operated by a finger, gloved hand, or soft tip stylus
  • Durable glass construction and long life
  • Fast response time

Disadvantages

  • Moving liquids or condensation can cause false touches
  • They are expensive
  • They can be easily damaged
  • Doesn’t support drag or draw effectively

What is Infrared Touchscreen and how it works?

Infrared touchscreen

An infrared touchscreen uses an array of X-Y infrared LED and photo detector pairs around the edges of the screen to detect a disruption in the pattern of LED beams. These LED beams cross each other in vertical and horizontal patterns. This helps the sensors pick up the exact location of the touch. When a user touch the surface of screen, the infrared emitted from LED beam is broken, the absence of the signal at the collector is detected and receiver transmits X-Y axis information to the PC port via touch controller.

Advantages

  • Clear as glass. TIhe clarity of the technology improves readability at a glance
  • Can detect essentially any input including a finger, gloved finger, stylus or pen
  • Doesn’t require any patterning on the glass which increases durability.
  • Comprehensive adaptability can resists any interference from current, voltage or static

Disadvantages

  • Since the infrared beams are a little in front of the display, touch is activated even before the user actually touches the display, causing parallax errors
  • Infrared touchscreens are also expensive .
  • Comparatively Low response time

Now we hope that after reading this What is it you must have cleared your each and every doubts about touchscreens and from the next time when you purchase a new smartphone, tablet, touch device etc you can easily choose the perfect one for you.
