How to Enable Classic Start Menu in Windows 8 Developers Preview

0

The Developer Preview build of Windows 8 was released some days back! I am among those people who actually want to have some of Windows 7’s features on Windows 8 Developers Preview. One such feature is the classic Start Menu. Here is an app which enable Classic Start Menu in Windows 8.

This app brings back the ‘Classic’  Windows 7 Start Menu with the click of a virtual button, by Solo-Dev of DeviantArt.

My first Windows 8 app! It allows you to toggle between the Metro Start screen and the Classic start menu in Windows 8 Developer Preview.

WINDOWS 8 ONLY.

RUN AS ADMIN. (Win 8 may require you to download and install the .Net 3.5.1 runtimes)
Feel free to share it to other websites!

I have tested this app personally on Windows 8 Developer Preview and can confirm that it works as claimed.

Once you installed and launch the app, Simply click on Use Classic Start Menu and the app enables Classic Start Menu on your Windows 8. If you want to change it back to normal than simply click on Use Metro Start Screen, It will change it back to Normal.

Step by step Guide to Install Windows 8 Developers Preview in Virtual Machine.

Microsoft just launched Windows 8 Developers Preview & here is a very easy step by step guide to Install Windows 8 Developers Preview via Virtual Machine.

I am installing Windows 8 Developers Preview via VM VirtualBox (You can install it with any other Virtual Machine, like VMware or Parallels. I am using Virtual Box because it’s free), & I will suggest you that if you are interested in Installing it, Don’t install it as a Primary OS, because it’s just a Developers Preview even not a Beta Version. They are making it better day by day. So it will be better not to install it as a primary OS.

Before Installing Windows 8 you must have these things downloaded & Installed. Obviously Windows 8 Developers Preview & Virtual Machine of your choice, Here I’ll prefer VirtualBox but you can download & use VMware Workstation & Parallels (These are Paid Software’s)

Step by Step Guide for installing Windows 8 Developers Preview

Step 1

Go to VirtualBox & Click on New button (See Screenshot for details)

Step 2

Just Click Next!

Step 3

Type in a name (ex: Techuncover or Windows 8 Developer Preview) for the virtual machine, select Windows 7 if have a 32-bit or Windows 7 (64-bit) if you have a 64-bit, then click on Next. (see screenshots below)

Step 4

Select or type in how much of your computer’s RAM (1024MB = 1GB) you would like for the virtual machine to use when it’s running, By default VirtualBox allocates 512 MB of RAM. Click on Next. (see screenshot below)

Step 5

Just Click Next (No need to change the settings here)

Step 6

Select VHD (Virtual Hard Disk), and click Next. (see screenshot below)

Step 7

Option Dynamically allocated is selected already, You just need to click on Next.

Step 8

Select how large you would like the VHD (Virtual Hard Disk) file to be, and click on Next. (see screenshot below)
NOTE: The default size is 20 GB, and is fine if you are not going to be installing a lot of software’s on the virtual machine.

Step 9

Click on the Create Button. (see screenshot below)

Step 10

Click on Create button to confirm!

Step 11

In the left pane, double click on the new virtual machine (ex: Techuncoer or Windows 8 Developer Preview). & than Click Next (see screenshot below)

Step 12

Click on the browse folder icon, select the downloaded ISO file of Windows 8 Developers Preview which you downloaded earlier, click on Open, and click on Start. (see screenshots below)

Step 13

Once the setup is loaded, hit Install Now, accept the license terms and hit Next.

Select Custom (advanced), select whichever disk it gives you (it will most likely say “Disk 0 Unallocated Space”) and hit Next

Once it’s done installing, go through the typical Customization/Setup Process..

That’s it, you’ve successfully installed the first Windows 8 Developer Preview in a Virtual Machine!

Windows 8 Metro theme, new wallpaper and other elements leak..

The world is anxiously awaiting a Windows 8 leak and it is becoming more apparent that many users now have their hands on the alpha platform. Since we initially reported that Windows 8 was now on Microsoft Connect, new information has been surfacing from a multiple directions.

The latest information comes from two sources, MDL and ZDnet. The dark theme and taskbar images show what is expected to be the new ‘Metro’ UI which is expected to ship with Windows 8. While not confirmed, the dark theme appears to be the ‘Aero Lite’ variant that we reported on previously.

The next bit of information shows a new wallpaper from Windows 8 that was sent as a tip to Zdnet and they state (you can download the wallpaper here):

In addition to the screen shot and wallpaper I was sent, I’ve been informed there are Jupiter bits (a new user interface (UI) library for Windows) scattered throughout the OS, as well as signs of Windows 8’s new “Twin UI” via a new DLL aptly named TWINUI.DLL.

There is not a lot of new information in these shots but they do show that more users now have the build in their hands outside the walls of Microsoft. It is expected that a leak of these builds will happen in the near future, but we will not place any speculation on rumored dates and times that have previously been mentioned.
